Zanesville Stoneware Company, (ZSC), Zanesville, Ohio. In business from 1887-2002. The older stoneware, (1960's and earlier), is very collectible and sought after. Much of it is not marked, but most of it, especially earlier pieces, are very heavy, have thin runny glaze, distinctive yellowish clay on the bottom, and pinpops in the glaze. You can view the few marks that were used in J. Ran's book. According to the book on Zanesville pottery, this company did not like to mark their pottery because imported pottery had to be marked with the country of origin, therefore, Zanesville felt it was not necessary to mark their pottery since it was American made. Great to use indoors or out, and it fits just about any decor including modern! PS: The President of the Zanesville Pottery Co., K.L. Castor, (ZPC, not ZSC,) contacted me to say that ZSC is out of business, however, ZPC is in business. All of the items I have for sale are ZSC items.

Reference Information:
--Zanesville Stoneware Company Identification & Value Guide by Jon Rans, 2002. This book shows the few marks that Zanesville used on their items as well as many of the items they made, and has old catalog pages. Zanesville is very easy to identify whether marked or not once you become familiar with it.

Zanesville Stoneware Flower Vase Lovely vintage Zanesville Stoneware gloss vase. The book calls the color seacrest green; I call it aqua. This American vase is shown in the book by J. Rans on Zanesville Stoneware Co., pg. 76. No chips or cracks; just a bit of mineral residue on interior of pot and typical runny glaze . It is 4 tall x 4.5 wide at top rim. Likely made in the 1930's. ZSC is no longer in business. 2/09rocs

Early Zanesville Matte Green Vase & Frog Antique Zanesville matte green dish garden and frog. This vase/planter is shown on page 198 of the ZSC book, shape 208; c:1920's. Very nice condition for its age. It has 3 stilt marks on bottom and no chips or cracks. It is 7 wide x 3 tall with a raised leaf design. There are a couple of pin dot pops in the glaze as expected for ZSC. You also get the mottled matted green flower disc to display in it, 2.5 wide x 1 tall. Pic #5 shows it next to a ZSC aqua jardinaire. Outstanding pottery for your arts & crafts collection! ro-cs8/09+frg

Art Pottery Flower Frog Vintage art pottery lilly pad flower frog. Unique, hard-to-find item! Blue blended glazed lilly pad flower holder/frog. This item is shown in the Zanesville book, with same measurements, but another person relates it is also shown in the Fulper book. The clay on bottom is different from ZSC, so Fulper is more likely. Early companies copied each other frequently. This lilly pad has a grease mark on bottom, #50 and what appears to be a letter and then a P, but not sure on the letters because they are quite faded. It measures 3.75 wide one way, and 4 wide another way; and is 1.75 high. No chips or cracks, but does have crazing if you look at it upside down. Can you live without this little beauty?

Zanesville Art Pottery Overflow Vase Very large hand thrown Zanesville Stoneware Co. art pottery overflow vase. It is 15.5 tall. Pick up in MI; no shipping; too large. Age est: 1918-30's. Black overflow glaze. Shape no #108, (incised number on bottom). The same shape number is shown on pg. 121 of J. Rans book, (different glaze); ZSC did a variety of overflow glaze colors. The overflow glazes were made at the end of WWI which was 1918. No chips or cracks; one tiny circular glaze skip. Heavy duty; well-made American pottery. Very nice old piece; the unglazed bottom is quite aged and smooth. I believe it is a hand turned piece; there are horizontal ridges on the exterior and interior of vase and no mold lines, but I could be mistaken. Rare find. ZSC was known for their large garden ware which hotels, restaurants, offices started using indoors as well. 4/11s#

Vintage Matte Green Pottery Shakers Vintage matte green pottery shakers. Yellow clay; cork stoppers. Age est: 1920's. They could be early Zanesville Stoneware, Roseville, etc. Camark made some similar shakers but Camark has white clay, not yellow. There are some small spots where the green glaze is not quite covering and the yellow clay is peeking through but no chips or cracks. They stand 3 inches tall. Very cool shakers for your Arts & Crafts room or table! 9/14

pzanes1504

Zanesville Centerpiece Vase Large Very large vintage Zanesville Stoneware centerpiece vase. Thick, heavy vase made by ZSC which is no longer in business. 15 wide x 7 tall. It has an incised stamp mark on bottom that is shown on pg. 37 of the 2002 book by Jon Rans; and the vase itself is shown on a catalog page on pg. 218, mold #826. The bottom stamp reads: Henry Foster Finer Flowers Fisher Bldg. The stamps were put on at the Zanesville plant and then shipped to various florist shops according to the book. There is a Fisher Bldg. in Detroit, and this was probably made for that florist when Detroit was still a thriving city, pre-1950's. This wonderful, unique, vase, has no chips or cracks and just the typical Zanesville pinpops and runny glaze. Looks great as a table centerpiece, atop a vintage plant stand, or on top of a corner cabinet.

minibeanpots30309

Miniature Vintage Stoneware Beanpots Four vintage miniature stoneware beanpots or cookie jars. Being sold as collectible display items only; I did not manufacture them so I don't know what they were made with; they might not be safe for food use. Aqua, Cornflower Blue, Brown, and Matte Lavender. All have unglazed yellow clay bottoms as a Zanesville item would have. These are shown in the ZSC book although a slight possibility they might be UHL or Rookwood since both companies made them too. These stand 3.25 tall x 3 wide. Some have pinpops, (lid of aqua jar); some clay gouges; and the brown one has a fleabite on rim edge, but no other chips or cracks. The lavendar one is extra special; I have never come across that color and I handle a ton of pottery. All have little ear/half moon style handles. These also might have been salesman's samples. labant3/09-ck

zanesvillejar100310

Rare Zanesville Stoneware Garden Jar Massive vintage ZSC 'garden jar' as the book calls it. No shipping; it must be picked up in MI if you want it. Too big to ship! It is 53 inches around and 16.5 tall and very thick. It is shown in J. Rans book on pg. 251 catalog 12, mold 849, c:1951 & earlier. Not marked, and most early ZSC was not. It has an old, worn bottom rim. No chips or cracks. I would term this vase as 'rare' because I could not locate another one on-line anywhere, and it is only shown on a catalog page in the book. The colors are contemporary looking even though it's an oldie; grey/blue color with purple and seafoam colored grapes. This was purchased from the estate of a deceased antique dealer who had it in her home for ages! Outstanding vintage American pottery! They just don't make pottery like this any longer! 10/10br#3358;?

vintagevase0819

Large Vintage Satin White Vase Large vintage satin white vase. This vase appears to be hand formed, (it has ridges on the interior, but might not be). It is an oldie, but not sure which company made it. It could be Zanesville or Monmouth or another company. I will check the books when I have some free time. It is 9.5 tall and has no cracks but does have some other flaws. It has one sliver chip off the bottom which barely shows when vase is upright and you really have to be looking for it to find it; and it has a couple of very small fleabites off the top rim and some stray black marks common on vintage white pottery. It has crazing and some pin pops. Despite the flaws, it's a great vase for flowers or just to display with other vintage white pottery. 8/19

Zanesville Hand Thrown Ware Antique Zanesville Stoneware hand thrown pottery pitcher. Deep burgundy which I believe the book would call 'mahogany' as opposed to the lighter matte rose. And, because this is a hand thrown item, it indicates it was made early, was higher grade, and these pieces were usually special ordered. The book mentions the 'mahogany' finish on pg. 28 of J. Rans book and on pg. 152 and 157 Catalog #4. This pitcher/vase is shown on pg. 201. It has the yellow clay glazed bottom with incised mark: D 11 which corresponds to the book mark. It stands 8.25 tall. It has a couple tiny spots of clay waste; and tiny rough spot on the top rim edge, and couple of pinpops; see all photos. Overall condition is very nice. A great piece of antique American made pottery for your arts & crafts collection! Final markdown. 10/14

Vintage Zanesville Stoneware Vases Vintage Zanesville Stoneware vase trio. Three for one price! No chips or cracks. Two have the triangular shaped openings; the other has the square shaped opening. All are shown in the book on ZSC. One is a cornflower blue; one is deep dark turquoise; other is softer aqua/seafoam. The blue and dark turquoise one are 4.5 tall; other one is 4 tall. All have some typical zsc runny areas where the yellow clay is showing through the darker glaze. These pots are great for sedums, cactus, African Violets. You can easily drill a drainage hole in the bottoms if you want to use live plants. These are hefty stoneware and will last a long time. I like to use ZSC on my deck in the summertime; they just go with contemporary and moder furnishing too! 1/15vs

Zanesville Stoneware Vase Planters Zanesville stoneware vase or planter trio for sale! = only $13 each! Cute pots, great for African Violets, cactus, etc. The blue one is 4 tall; it has some gouges in the clay near the bottom rim which do not show when it is upright, see photo #7. The aqua ones are 4.25 tall; have some glaze rubs and pinpops typical on ZSC stoneware. I use several of these ZCS vases on my deck in the summer since they are so durable and fit into contemporary furnishings. If using for a live plant, put the plant in a clay pot first with a baggie under it, or drill a hole in the bottom of the ZSC pots for drainage. I prefer to use the new faux plants; they look just like a live plant but you don't need dirt or water, no mess, no fuss! 2.15
