Zanesvile Stoneware Pink Planter
Stoneware Jardinaire Vintage
Zanesville Country Fare Casseroles

Zanesville Stoneware Company, (ZSC), Zanesville, Ohio. In business from 1887-2002. The older stoneware, (1960's and earlier), is very collectible and sought after. Much of it is not marked, but most of it, especially earlier pieces, are very heavy, have thin runny glaze, distinctive yellowish clay on the bottom, and pinpops in the glaze. You can view the few marks that were used in J. Ran's book. According to the book on Zanesville pottery, this company did not like to mark their pottery because imported pottery had to be marked with the country of origin, therefore, Zanesville felt it was not necessary to mark their pottery since it was American made. Great to use indoors or out, and it fits just about any decor including modern! PS: The President of the Zanesville Pottery Co., K.L. Castor, (ZPC, not ZSC,) contacted me to say that ZSC is out of business, however, ZPC is in business. All of the items I have for sale are ZSC items.

Reference Information:
--Zanesville Stoneware Company Identification & Value Guide by Jon Rans, 2002. This book shows the few marks that Zanesville used on their items as well as many of the items they made, and has old catalog pages. Zanesville is very easy to identify whether marked or not once you become familiar with it.

Zanesville Stoneware Flower Vase Lovely vintage Zanesville Stoneware gloss vase. The book calls the color seacrest green; I call it aqua. This American vase is shown in the book by J. Rans on Zanesville Stoneware Co., pg. 76. No chips or cracks; just a bit of mineral residue on interior of pot and typical runny glaze . It is 4 tall x 4.5 wide at top rim. Likely made in the 1930's. ZSC is no longer in business. 2/09rocs

Early Zanesville Matte Green Vase & Frog Antique Zanesville matte green dish garden and frog. This vase/planter is shown on page 198 of the ZSC book, shape 208; c:1920's. Very nice condition for its age. It has 3 stilt marks on bottom and no chips or cracks. It is 7 wide x 3 tall with a raised leaf design. There are a couple of pin dot pops in the glaze as expected for ZSC. You also get the mottled matted green flower disc to display in it, 2.5 wide x 1 tall. Pic #5 shows it next to a ZSC aqua jardinaire. Outstanding pottery for your arts & crafts collection! ro-cs8/09+frg

Art Pottery Flower Frog Vintage art pottery lilly pad flower frog. Unique, hard-to-find item! Blue blended glazed lilly pad flower holder/frog. This item is shown in the Zanesville book, with same measurements, but another person relates it is also shown in the Fulper book. The clay on bottom is different from ZSC, so Fulper is more likely. Early companies copied each other frequently. This lilly pad has a grease mark on bottom, #50 and what appears to be a letter and then a P, but not sure on the letters because they are quite faded. It measures 3.75 wide one way, and 4 wide another way; and is 1.75 high. No chips or cracks, but does have crazing if you look at it upside down. Can you live without this little beauty?

Zanesville Art Pottery Floor Vase Very large hand thrown Zanesville Stoneware Co. art pottery floor vase. 15.5 tall. Age est: 1920's-40's. Black overflow glaze. Shape no #108, (incised number on bottom). The same shape number is shown on pg. 121 of J. Rans book, (different glaze); ZSC did a variety of overflow glaze colors. No chips or cracks; one tiny circular glaze skip. Heavy duty; well made American pottery. Very nice old piece; the unglazed bottom is quite aged and smooth. Rare find. ZSC was known for their large garden ware which hotels, restaurants, offices started using indoors as well. Antique Zanesville Matte Vase Rare Rare color antique Zanesville matte glaze vase. c:1912-20's. Incised #37 on bottom. 12 inches tall. No chips or cracks; has one white line on it and some pinpops. Very nice arts and crafts vase. The color is a very deep burgandy; I believe the book calls this color 'mahogany' as opposed to the lighter colored 'matte rose'. The mahogany is mentioned on pg. 28 of J. Rans book and shown on pg. 152 and 157 Catalog 4. That would put it's manufacturing date around 1912-1920's. I also have this vase in the gloss aqua and matte green for sale separately. The matte green would be the 20's and the aqua would be the 30's. Final markdown. 11/12

There are some small spots where the green glaze is not quite covering and the yellow clay is peeking through but no chips or cracks. They stand 3 inches tall. oiljar0612

Huge USA Floor Vases Two massive mauve floor vases, aka oil jars. They are 18.5 inches tall. The price is for one floor jard. The other one is listed separately but they are identical. The one shown here has only one scuff mark on it. I attribute these to the Zanesville Stoneware Co. after reviewing my book and based on my expertise collecting ZSC for over 35 years. The book shows the same shape jars and they made in this color, (the color in the book is called matte lavendar). Yellowish clay on bottom. Thick and heavy duty. They both have an incised USA mark on bottom. Great for indoors or out. If you want to use outdoors, drill a hole in center bottom for drainage, easy to do. No chips or cracks; nice condition. Other companies that made similar jars are McCoy, Brush, and Ransbottom. However, Ransbottom usually marked their wares with a number and dash mark, and McCoy wares are not quite as thick and hefty as ZSC. These vases will last a few more lifetimes! The other one is listed separately. Great for long willow branches, palms, bamboo, cattails outdoors, etc. If you want to order this item, please e-mail me your zip code first so I can get an accurate shipping quote for you. 6/12clestcsr

These old frogs make unique paper weights and pencil holders too! Age est: 1930's-40's.

Stoneware Vintage Cookie Jar Vintage stoneware cookie jar. 99% sure it is Zanesville Stoneware Co. Awesome, heavy-duty vintage cookie jar. Age est: 1930's. It is quite heavy and stands 9 tall x 6 wide across top interior rim. No chips or cracks; just two tiny glaze pops on lid, and a larger glaze miss on side, see photo #5. A great piece of vintage stoneware to use or display! And, ZSC is notorious for not marking their early pottery, and is now out of business. Thanks for visiting More Than McCoy!

Teddy Bear Cookie Jar Vintage Vintage teddy bear cookie jar. This one is shown in the book by M. Schneider, page 282 in the white color with black bear, see photo #6. There are also identical shaped jars that have different animals and characters on them; i.e., one has a rabbit; one has a gingerbread man, a cowboy, and a cow jumped over the moon jar. I sold one with the cowboy, the rabbit and the gingerbread man in the past. This cool jar is 10 inches tall with yellow clay dry bottom. I believe this cookie jar was either made by Zanesville Stoneware Co., c:1930's, or was made by another company in the Zanesville, Ohio region. None of the jars mentioned are marked and a lot of early pottery before the 40's was not marked. It has no chips or cracks; one small gouge in the lid as you can see in a photo, and some missing cold paint. This item is for collectible display only; not for actual food use these days. The color is a very hot accent color this year too! If you'd like to order this; email me your zip code for a more accurate ship quote. 5/16

No chips or cracks; all over crazing and some spidering. It is 6.5 tall. Yellow clay peeking through the aqua glaze. Very nice piece! 5/10esa#3108

pzanes1504

Zanesville Centerpiece Vase Large Very large vintage Zanesville Stoneware centerpiece vase. Thick, heavy vase made by ZSC which is no longer in business. 15 wide x 7 tall. It has an incised stamp mark on bottom that is shown on pg. 37 of the 2002 book by Jon Rans; and the vase itself is shown on a catalog page on pg. 218, mold #826. The bottom stamp reads: Henry Foster Finer Flowers Fisher Bldg. The stamps were put on at the Zanesville plant and then shipped to various florist shops according to the book. There is a Fisher Bldg. in Detroit, and this was probably made for that florist when Detroit was still a thriving city, pre-1950's. This wonderful, unique, vase, has no chips or cracks and just the typical Zanesville pinpops and runny glaze. Looks great as a table centerpiece, atop a vintage plant stand, or on top of a corner cabinet. If you want to order this item, please e-mail me your zip code first so I can get an accurate shipping quote for you. Shipping to usa destinations only.

Miniature Vintage Stoneware Beanpots Four vintage miniature stoneware beanpots or cookie jars. Aqua, Cornflower Blue, Brown, and Matte Lavender. All have unglazed yellow clay bottoms as a Zanesville item would have. These are shown in the ZSC book although a slight possibility they might be UHL or Rookwood since both companies made them too. These stand 3.25 tall x 3 wide. Some have pinpops, (lid of aqua jar); some clay gouges; and the brown one has a fleabite on rim edge, but no other chips or cracks. The lavendar one is extra special; I have never come across that color and I handle a ton of pottery. All have little ear/half moon style handles. These also might have been salesman's samples. Great to display on a child's hutch! labant3/09-ck

zanesvillejar100310

Rare Zanesville Stoneware Garden Jar Massive vintage ZSC 'garden jar' as the book calls it. No shipping; it must be picked up in MI if you want it. It is 53 inches around and 16.5 tall and very thick. It is shown in J. Rans book on pg. 251 catalog 12, mold 849, c:1951 & earlier. Not marked, and most early ZSC was not. It has an old, worn bottom rim. No chips or cracks. I would term this vase as 'rare' because I could not locate another one on-line anywhere, and it is only shown on a catalog page in the book. The colors are contemporary looking even though it's an oldie; grey/blue color with purple and seafoam colored grapes. This was purchased from the estate of an antique dealer who had it in her home for ages! Outstanding vintage American pottery! They just don't make pottery like this any longer! 10/10br#3358;?

floorvase080911

Yellow Vintage Floor Vase Oil Jar Large vintage yellow floor vase. Some books call them oil jars. Very thick and heavy; yellowish clay on unmarked bottom. Based on the above factors, I would say it is a Zanesville Stoneware jar. Ransbottom has more of a tan clay and is usually marked, and McCoy jars are not quite as thick as ZSC. It is almost 16 inches tall; it would be shape 'J' shown in J. Rans book. No chips or cracks. The yellow is not quite a bright as the lst pic and not faded like the 2nd pic; it is a Pooh Bear soft mellow yellow. It has some crazing circling the top neck area. Very nice old vase. You can use outdoors if you drill a hole in center bottom for drainage; great for bamboo, cattails, palms, sunflowers!
