'Pyrography' is a term used to describe the burnishing on wood; usually every space was shaded, textured, or outlined by burning and sometimes enhanced with color. It was very popular in the Victorian era until about 1920. The Flemish Art Company of N.Y. was one of the first suppliers of burnishing tools for homemakers and factories. The name 'Flemish Art' became a generic term for 'pyrography', (burnt wood and etching). Homemakers often burnished sewing, hanky and collar boxes for personal use and for gifts.

Antique Seed Box Antique wooden seed box. Has tongue and groove corners. Inside seed pictures is intact and reads: Mandeville & King Co. Superior Flower Seeds, Rochester, N.Y. You can see where the original paper slots would have fit on the bottom of box but are no longer there. The box itself is showing a lot of age; has some splits in the wood, but makes a great primitive display item. It is 15.5 wide; x 3 deep x 12 tall not including handle. It would also make a cool artist paint brush box. Just saw one of these sell at a live auction for $185! Nice display item for a potting shed or to store seedpacks, postcards, candles, etc.! cstroyest9.07

Vintage Pyrography Wood Box Awesome vintage pyrography wood box. Also known as Flemish Art, and made for gloves, collars, ties, etc. The picture on the box features a cowboy, horse, red roses, bird, horseshoe, etc. Good overall condition; has a one inch tight split on lower right corner of lid, (you can glue it if you need perfection). You also get two vintage pairs of gloves to put in it! These gloves are great to stuff, tie a ribbon on the end, and then you can stick your hatpins in them, or display your bracelets, rings, etc. on them, see pic #6.

Celluloid Hanky Box and Hanky Victorian celluloid hanky box and hanky. Lovely antique celluloid box, popular in the Victorian era, featuring a lady and gent in colonial attire. Nice brass clasp and hinges. Interior is intact but is dingy. Looks like someone dropped a cigarette on the top of this box, (cigarette burn). This box is 6.5 wide; 2.75 tall x 5.5 long/deep. Very pretty despite the cig. burn. You also get the vintage lace hanky as your free gift to start your collection! A nice accessory item to display on an antique dresser or shelf in your Victorian home! ut

Antique Celluloid Accessory Box Antique celluloid accessory box. This box once held manicure implements. The lid features a lady in a row boat. This box is in quite lovely condition for its age and has a blue silk/satin lining. It is 9.25 wide x 3 tall x 5 deep. It has an old paper label on the bottom and some numbers/letters in blue ink; fairly certain it is a vintage Italian paper label. The perfect feminine gift! Antique Art Nouveau Trinket Box Antique art nouveau Victorian trinket box. The metal looks like spelter. It has initials: 'B&W' in an oval on bottom with #136. It is nicely made with embossed roses on it. Interior satin lining is missing which is easily replaceable. PS: This is not a Butler & Wilson contemporary item; their mark is on jewelry and it is within a circle, not an oval. You could put antique gold paint on it, or shabby chic it, spray it silver, or leave as is. 3-08-cs

Antique Celluloid Box and Hanky Antique celluloid hanky box and hanky. Lovely celluloid box featuring a young lady wearing a puffy purse that looks very similar to the antique beaded purse I have for sale! These boxes were popular during the Victorian era. The top of box is in good display condition; sides are missing some paper as is common on these fragile boxes. Nice detailed brass clasp and hinges. Inside tag reads: Handkerchiefs. A lot of wear and tears on interior of box; appears to be pink silk. It has an old red/white paper label on bottom that I believe is an Italian label. You can cut some velvet or silk and redo the interior, or add your favorite hankies or collars to hide lining. You also get the nice lace edged hanky with original foil tag: FISBA Stoffels Swiss Made. The box is 7.75 wide x 6.5 long x 2.75 tall. The paper on these boxes is very delicate and fragile, so be careful when handling them. The perfect accessory item to display on an antique dresser or shelf in your Victorian home!

Oriental Vintage Box Vintage oriental box. OUTSTANDING! Gorgeous, VERY HEAVY, likely bronze box with an incised floral motif, and a lined wood interior. It has an incised 'Made in China' mark on the bottom. It had a label on the bottom when I bought it that said: circa 1910, but it is now missing. I do believe it does date to that age based on the weight of this box and the wood interior, which you do not find on the newer imported brass items from China. A gorgeous box to use or display. This is likely an antique tobacco humidor; a similar one is shown in the book on Tobacianna. This would make a great gift for someone who collects old boxes; or just to use a furniture accessory item! 6.25 long x almost 3 inches tall x 4.25 deep

Vintage Brass Tobacco? Box Vintage enameled brass tobacco? box. Great unique gift! It has black enameling and a wood lining. Very heavy for its size. This is likely an old tobacco/cigarette/snuff box - I base that on the wood lining inside. It has brass hinges and measures 4.75 x 3.25 x 2 high. It also has a small inlaid design on the interior of the lid and box, but I do not know what these symbols mean. The little lever on the front of the box turns so that the latch stays closed. It is a very lovely decorative display item for your office, library, or bookcase, especially if you love quality brass pieces. This would make a great gift for the person who loves beautiful unique items, or the vintage box collector! Age est: early 20th C.

Enameled Brass Double Card Box Vintage cloisonne double card box. This box has a wood lining on the interior that has a partition in it for two decks of cards. The exterior has a dark patina on the brass; interior lid is still bright. I would guestimate this box was likely made in Asia or India in the early 20th C to 1940's judging by the wood interior. It has a brown felt pad lining the bottom of it which I removed to see if this box was marked, but it is not. Good condition and is 1.25 tall; 5.5 inches wide x 4 . A great vintage box for your card table, or box collection!

The box may have been for jewelry, makeup, hankies, or bridge accessories, not sure but there is a large mirror on the underside of lid so it was likely for jewelry or makeup. It is missing one of the small wood slats on the interior which is easily replaceable, see pic #7. The box is 11 wide x 3 tall x 9.25 wide. Minor age wear; still usable. Another dealer told me these boxes were made in Russia but I cannot verify that. 12/13smc

Vintage Box Poppies Large vintage box with poppy print under glass. Age est: 1920's. This is a really pretty old box. There is some wear on the interior but it's not bad. This box has old glare glass on it so it was a bit hard to get clear pictures. The interior of lid has a mirror. This box is 14 wide x 11.75 deep x 3.5 tall. Makes a great furniture accessory for display, or you could put some items in there like vintage gloves, hankies, etc. It is rather fragile so putting heavy items inside would not be recommended. 2/13smc

Victorian Mother of Pearl Box Outstanding Victorian mop paper mache box. c:1880 according to the auction catalog. This box came from the estate of a private N.Y. collector/sold at a high end auction in MI. Magnificent box that is so much nicer than the pictures show it, (the camera picks up more details than the naked eye). It is mother of pearl & abilone inlay on paper mache. 7.5 x 7.75 wide x 2.25 tall. Some alligatoring of the paper as expected. Likely English, my research indicates it could be early 1830's, by Jennings & Bettridge. Not sure if this was for jewelry or bridge accessories. The perfect gift! dm-auc11-07

English Antique Tea Caddy Gorgeous antique English tea caddy. c:1825-1864 according to my research; the auction catalog says 1850. This came from the estate of a private N.Y. collector and sold at a fine auction in MI. Stunning antique box, much more beautiful than the pictures are showing it. Likely J&B, (Jennings & Bettridge; over 60% were not signed J&B). The lock has impressed 'VR' for Victoria Regina with anchor symbol, and 'Patent' mark. The original key comes with it that does work to lock it and had an old paper label 'No. 401'. This box features mother of pearl and abilone inlay in a Victorian floral design. It has 2 compartments with finials on the lids which are also carved pearl. It is lined with silver tea paper. Box is 4.5 tall x 7 long x 5 wide. It has one small area on the interior underside back of lid which was difficult to photograph that might be a small repaired spot or just the way it was made, but is a minor flaw, and not something anyone would notice without scouring it since it is on the interior. No chips or flakes. This is an outstanding antique. Price is firm; way less what I paid for it; my loss, your gain! au-CC-V-kk-11-07

This attractive box has a cowboy boots and saddle motif. It holds one box of cards and is 6 long x 4 wide x 2 tall. There is some wear along the edges, but its not bad. The photos showing the flaws are magnified photos. You can touch those spots up with dark color Old English if you want to. A great vintage accessory piece if you have a Western themed room! 10/18

Hand Painted Pairpoint Box Antique Pairpoint silverplate box. c:1880-early 1900's. Quadruple plate metal box with gorgeous hand painted and enameled porcelain lid featuring a variety of very finely painted flowers. This box is 5.25 wide x 4 deep x 3 tall. Incised circular mark on bottom: 'Pairpoint Mfg. Co., New Bedford, Mass, #967, Quadruple Plate, and P in a diamond symbol'. The porcelain lid is in good antique condition; just missing one small spot of the metal mesh edging, see picture #6; one side of box is a bit corroded; other sides are just tarnished. Pairpoint is best known for its glass, but originally started out as a metalworks company that also decorated Limoges white wares during the early 1900's; thus the lid is likely Limoges porcelain. A small plain Pairpoint silverplate tobacco box sold for $600 according to Worthpoint! This is a one of a kind antique! est8.06#1511
