Ironstone is the term used for fine china blended with iron. The formula was first developed and patented in England. However, American companies also produced Ironstone products. Ironstone is less likely to crack or splinter than ordinary porcelain.

Large Mason's Antique Ironstone Platter Large Mason's patent ironstone transferware platter. c: 1815+. Being sold as collectible display item and not for food use since I did not make it, nor do I know if it has anything harmful in it. Mason's was absorbed by the Wedgwood group; newer pieces have Ltd on them. Watteau pattern. Brown Transferware. Brown backstamp Mason's over crown then banner: Patent Ironstone China, then Watteau England, then 'Guaranteed Permanent Acid Resisting Colour' and #5. No chips or cracks; all over faint crazing. It is 14.25 wide. It is shown next to a dinner plate in one picture just to show you how large it is. A great platter to display! If you decide to use it, use a heavy paper doily on it first. 6/12dixcsr

Rare Antique Soup Tureen Rare antique ironstone soup tureen.. Made by J.W. Pankhurst, Hanley, England. This company was only in business from c:1852-1883. Good antique condition; no chips or cracks. A couple of black pepper teensy dots, (hot ash marks when fired?) see photos; and 3 stilt marks on the interior bottom. This company was preceded by William Ridgway and was taken over by Johnson Bros. The bottom reads: 'Stone China' which is the same as Ironstone according to my research. This large tureen is about 10.5 tall x 13 wide from handle end to other handle; the bowl is 9.25 wide. Very nice and can go in a Victorian or a more contemporary dining room since it is white! If the shipping amount comes up weird, e-mail me before payment and I will check it for you. grc2/18

Alfred Meakin Large Antique Pitcher Large antique Alfred Meakin pitcher. c. 1914. It is 12.5 tall; and I believe it is ironstone, though not marked ironstone. It is not porcelain. The bottom backstamp is a blue wreath circling a unicorn and the words: Alfred Meakin England. It has some tiny black pepper sized dots on it, (hot ash marks that occur during firing), and a couple of bigger black marks on the interior bottom, see photos. It has some yellowing near bottom rim which does not show when the pitcher is upright and one tiny circular gouge mark on bottom rim, it has smooth edges so may have been there when it was made or it's a super old teeny tiny chip. This pitcher makes a great display piece if you collect vintage white pottery or ironstone; or you can add a large bowl and use it on an antique washstand or add a bouquet of flowers! 2/18

Patented Antique Large Transferware Platter Large patented transferware platter. c: 1885-86, Backstamp: Tournay, crown over shield symbol, Royal Premium, T & R Boote, England, Rd No. 33645 and incised: Rd.31073. This is a heavy platter with transferware design. It feels like ironstone. It has a repairable flaw which is not noticeable unless looking for it. There is a 3 inch hairline that goes through the platter with one small fleabite on the top surface side on rim, see closeups of pics 6-7. You can put porcelain repair on the underside to seal the hairline or take to a ceramic shop to repair it. If just displaying it, you probably would never notice it unless it's under your nose. This platter is 16.75 long x 12 wide. It also has a couple of straw marks; also not noticeable. Very large, attractive antique. 12/12scsr
